Using Tonelab LE for recording: Advice please.

Postby Musicscotty » 23 Feb 2008, 23:46

My first post, so Hello all.

I'm considering getting a Tonelab LE for home recording.

I currently use a Boss BR-900CD digital recorder and it's onboard effects but they are strictly limited and to be honest the ones that are there aren't that great.

So, the obvious question I have is does anyone use this combination of Tonelab LE and Boss BR recorders?

I'm hoping that they will be compatible and connect either by MIDI cable or just a normal jack.

If anyone has any experience in using both machines, I'd be interested in knowing about it?

Cheers

I use a first version Tonelab with a Korg digital recorder, and they work great together. I connect using the digital optic jacks. I'm not sure that helps you much.

Thanks for that Rlaf.

It does actually help to reassure me that the TLLE and my recorder are compatible.

I plan to get a TLLE in a few days, so fingers crossed :D

I use a desktop Tonelab with a Yamaha AW16G recorder. Results are excelent whether I use the digital (optical) or analog jack connections.

Thanks Nik.

What difference to you hear from the two different types of connections?

Is it worth going down the digital route or is standard jack going to do the job?

Digital rout appeals to my sensibilities as an electronics engineer specializing in audio, and it frees up two input jacks on the recorder and the output jacks on the Tonelab are free to connect directly to inputs on another device (Electrix Repeater). It makes everything much tidier.

But I hear no difference in the recording, indicating that the D to A and A to D conversion needed for the regular analog connection is not the limiting factor for noise and distortion. There is far too much noise and distortion coming from the (modelled) amps within the Tonelab.
