Types of PAs for my LE

Postby JewCelt » 19 Dec 2009, 22:00

Hello all, and greetings from the states. I will be purchasing an LE very soon. Due to my utter technical ignorance, I need some elaboration on topics already discussed revolving around amplifying an LE. First, it has been suggested that active powered PAs are superior to passive systems. Why is this and, briefly, how do the two systems styles differ. Secondly, I have been looking at some affordable active Behringer PAs with either 12" or 15" woofers. I do like my sound to be full, bassy, and acoustic sounding. I also know that PAs tend to be brighter than typical amps. However, due to the fact the latest VT series amplifiers only are made up to 12" woofers, I suspect that a 15" woofer may muddy an LE's sound. Thanks for all the help so far.

I'll try to help and not confuse you.

In a passive PA system, the built in crossover filters inside the speaker cabinet divides and cuts the unwanted frequencies, sending the corrected frequency groups to their proper drivers (speaker, horn, exc.). This type of system requires fewer amplifiers (usually only one), but because it cuts (like turning a volume control down) it needs to have enough power to overcome the losses caused by its crossover circuit. Also the sound quality can be less clear, full and punchy as compared to in an active system.

In an active PA system, the frequencies are filtered, separated and boosted, then sent to separate amplifiers which then send the signal to designated drivers (speakers, horns, exc.), usually one or more amps for each frequency group (highs, mids, lows) respectfully. This type of system requires more amplifiers and the system becomes bigger. However, it delivers a much clearer sound that is punchier (quick and powerful) and the overall sound quality is fuller with more details.

Enter the new wave of powered speakers, technology just keeps getting better in this area! The new powered speakers are incredible sounding and light weight! I have a set of the new JBL powered mains (500 watts bi-amped) and they weigh only 32 pounds each (you can carry one in each hand)! They sound GREAT, so good that I now have the matching powered subs (600 watts each) and they only weigh 60 pounds each!

These light weight powered speakers hold there own against my larger conventional tri-amped active system! They may not be able to fill as big of an area as my larger system, but let me tell you they sure are nice to pack into clubs, small outdoor events and weddings. At just a fraction of the weight and equipment, they are superb!

I hope I was able to clear things up for you (no pun intended).
