Slide Guitar Tones

Postby tpb1962 » 08 Sep 2010, 03:27

Hello,

I'm looking for slide guitar tones similar to Derek Trucks, Duane Allman, Warren Haynes, etc.

I have the following:

Vox VT15
PRS Singlecut SE, original pickups.
Ibanez Tubescreamer
Tuned to Open E, Dunlop Pyrex Slide

I've tried older amp models with tubesreamer and some of the higher gain ones without the pedal but I'm not quite finding what I would like. The best way I can describe is a honk an wail type of sound.

Here is a clip of Warren Haynes with similar sound.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Tim.

He's playing a semi-acoustic jazz style guitar - that's a HUGE part of his sound. You won't get that tone with a solid body PRS SE!!! But you can get reasonably close - Tone sounds very Marshally to my ears so try the Marshall models & experiment with using the guitars volume to shape the tone ie with a little volume roll off. - this type of tone is actually quite easy to get generically with spring reverb and a shorter delay setting for that stacotto type effect.

Here he is with a PRS in standard tuning - great slide player!

Thanks Voxman.

I have tried the Marshall models and a couple of others and I have what I think are a couple of good ones for slide and the SE. I'll post the settings soon.

Thanks for the help,
Tim.

Hats off to ya for listening to The Allman Brothers. One of the best bands of all time in my opinion. :D :D

I would recommend being sparing with the reverb myself, especially if your like Derek and like to fly down and up the neck between phrases to get that gritty raw sound. too much reverb will just muddy that up when you have the treble at a level where its not rediculously piercing on the ears.

Probably not the tone you want, but I dabbled with some slide at the end of my latest VT40+ demo put on you-tube yesterday (just search for 'voxman5'.)

I don't recall, but if the VT15 has the Boutique Overdrive model, try that. It's modeling the Dumble Super, used most famously by David Lindley on Running on Empty, which is probably my favorite solo+tone of all time. That model provides a ton of character and enough sustain to carry out some nice slide work.
