Pedal board connection with CAT5?

Postby DaBirch » 22 Jun 2011, 07:15

Hi,

I'm planning a pedal board... I'd like to have all the pedals at my feet including the ones that go in the Fx-loop. This would result in three instrument cables (fx send and return plus the input to the amp) and the cat5 cable for the VC-12.
Now, I could make a snake, but it would still be bulky. Then I was thinking maybe it would be possible to run the three instrument cables in one CAT5 instead and make a snake with just the two cat5 cables.

Has anyone had any experience with running signal through CAT5?

Somehow this feels like a stupid question given that any talk of instrument cables usually is surrounded by both hype and very strong feelings as well as talk about conductance and capacitance, but is this really important for the FX-loop cables too?

No you can't run audio up a cat5, however what about some 4-core audio cable like this (£1.29/m)
http://www.maplin.co.uk/4-way-screened- ... 5&t=module

and cable tie to the cat5 every 1m or so

I wonder if it would work the other way around - get x-core audio cable and use some cores for the footpedal? Just musing

Well, that would be an option, however, it looks every bit as bulky as a snake?

What about studio quality analog tascam type cable with D-sub connectors? With 8 pairs of cable that would be enough for pedal board to amp, Fx-loop to pedal board back to fx-loop and also for the VC-12 connection to the amp! Think I have to try that one.
