Original Blue Tonelab with VC-12 Controller

Postby gotbluegrass » 19 Oct 2010, 21:46

I've had a Tonelab for a few months, but just got a VC-12. The secondary Vox-Bus connector on the VC-12 is damaged (e.g. cord ripped out most of the jack). But the primary seems to be fully intact. I hooked it up with a standard ethernet cable (I didn't get the original cable). The LEDs light up and they correspond to changes made on the Tonelab unit itself. Pressing any of the switches on the VC-12 will turn the LEDs on\off, but have no effect on the Tonelab settings. It seems like there is just one-way communications happening from the Tonelab to the VC-12. I also notice that when running through the various banks on the Tonelab, the two-digit display on the CC-12 runs through 1, 2, 3, 4 with & without dots, but it does not run through the same counters as the corresponding banks on the Tonelab (except, of course, for 1-4).

The VC-12 manual I downloaded online does not really talk about interacting with the Tonelab. And my Tonelab manual only mentions the VC-4 operations. So I am hoping someone who has used the Toenlabe with a VC-12 could give me a bit of insight on what I should expect in "normal" operation.

I don't have a Tonlab just a VC12 and a AD60VT but it sounds like your pedal isn't working right.

I should check the connection board especially if there are still parts of the secondary connector hanging out from the pedal, something could be shorted inside, or the card may have been damaged. If you can read schematics and know how to use a solder iron there's a service manual for the VC12 in the "Downloads" section on this site. If not, have a tech look at it.

The secondary connector doesn't have to be in place for the pedal to work, but it's a <$5 part if you open up the pedal anyway.

Thanks, Dan.

I did check this out and found that the primary connector had also been damaged. There were several traces on the board that had been severed causing a lack of continuity and hence control to\from the VC-12 & the Tonelab. I de-soldered the RJ connector and re-soldered it using hard wire due to the damaged traces. It now works like a champ! Although I don't anticipate ever using it, I did also get a replacement connector for the sub side and so now the unit is 100%.
