Noob needs help mapping settings...

Postby LPSWR » 09 Nov 2007, 05:53

I have one of the "Jam with Joe Satriani" books from Total Accuracy. For each music piece there is a settings diagram. In this case its for "Satch Boogie". I would like to use these settings as a starting point for a patch. I would appreciate some help in mapping the settings.

Here is a list of the settings, some are obvious, others not so much, at least to me.

Book Setting -> Tonlab Sound Editor Setting
------------------------------------------------
Amp Model: Brit Hi Gain -> UK '90s (?)
Drive 8 -> Drive 8
Base 4-> Base 4
Mid 7 -> Middle 7
Treble 7 -> Treble 7
Channel Volume 10 -> Ch Vol 10
Reverb Level 0 -> Reverb 0
Effect Tweak 5 -> (?)
Effects(Delay/Compressor) -> Delay (but what setting?)
Noise Gate (ON) -> (NR Sens ?)

Any help would be appreciated. If someone has already created a (good) patch for this piece please let me know.

Thanks.

You don't say for what song?

For most of his recording career, JS has used a Boss DS-1 pedal to get his distorion, into the clean channel of a Marshall 30th Anniversary 6100 model stack. I used to have one of these amps - the combo version, actually.

The clean channel is totally clean, and the circuit design is a big departure for Marshall as it is basically stollen from Fender. Also, the power valves are 5881 types, that give clean, high-headroom Fender character to the power amp section. The speakers, however, are pure Marshall 4x12 designs. I have his actual EQ control settings for that amp somehwere. I'll try to dig them out when I'm home.

So if it's an older song you are trying to copy, use the Black 2x12 amp model, with the UK T75 cabinet model. Use the Tube or Fat OD pedal effect, with high gain, medium level and the tone backed off a bit. Better still, use a Boss DS-1 pedal.

I used to play in a metal covers band that did a few JS songs. Time, Crystal Planet etc. No, I didn't play lead. But my mate pulled those songs off really well with a DS-1 pedal into the (Fendery) clean channel of his Marshall VS100r Valvestate combo.

Thanks for the response.

I did indicate the song it's "Satch Boogie". Is that considered an older song? Sorry I just "discovered" Satriani when I started learning to play.

Thanks for the recommendations. I will give them a try. I'll look into a Boss DS-1 pedal.

BTW, here is what I currently have. Any suggestion on which would work best?

- UniValve w/Avatar 2x12 cab
- Marshall 410c

Satch Boogie is an old one. Sorry, I missed it on your original post.

What do you have the output of the Tonelab connected to? Not the Univalve, I hope.

For the most part I have just been using headphones... that was until last night when I accidentally stepped on the headphone cord and busted the connector on the ToneLab. :(

I currently have the Tonelab torn apart and will either have to fix the jack or find a replacement jack(if possible). While I'm at it I should also replace the optical connector as the "flap" cover/lock is missing. (it was a used unit). The optical connector still works it just won't lock in.

I don't suppose there is a thread on replacement parts is there?

Anyways back on topic...

I beginning to think that;
- for the Univalue, I'm pretty much stuck using pedals only if I want to use any effects
- for the JVM 410c, I'm can use pedals and\or an effects processor like the TC G-Major.
- for the ToneLab LE, what I could possibly do(besides just using headphones only) is perhaps to run the output(optical) into my Presonus FireStudio(optical in) and into Cubase Studio 4 and listen through the monitor speakers. At least that way I can also play back the LickLibrary Satch Boogie backing track and play along.

What do you think. Am I on the right track here?

Thanks.

The DS-1 had the tone set just above zero, Distortion maxed and Level at about 11 o'clock. The amp was generally set up with Bass at 2 o'clock, middle at 4 o'clock, treble at 10 o'clock, Presence at 10 o'clock and channel and master volumes around 2 0'clock. Marshall cabs with Celestion V30 speakers.
