Marshall 1960a cab with AD60VTH?

Postby brainrust » 23 Jan 2012, 16:37

Hi all, I'm new to this forum. I recently bought a second-hand AD60VTH for a very affordable price and I'm really happy with it. So far I've only tried it on headphones, because I don't have a cab yet. Up until now I've been a combo kind of guy. Right now, I'm figuring out which cabinet to get.

So this brings me to my question. Is a Marshall 1960a cab a good fit with the AD60VTH? I'm on budget and don't want to spend to much, and I can get this cabinet for about 300 euro. I play in a band and we play pretty noisy stuff.. garage indie noise rock, whatever you want to call it. Not metal though. The cab has four g12t75 speakers. Has anyone ever heard this combination? I live in The Netherlands and it's hard to find any Vox AD412 here.. and we have a string of gigs coming up in a month. Besides, the other guitar player has the 'Chrome' series AD100VTH with the Vox cab and we do want to maintain enough difference between our sounds.

Interested to hear your opinion.

I have a G12T75 in my Mark I Marshall Valvestate 8080 1x12 combo, and it's a very good sounding speaker.

The 1960a is a darned good cab & four GT1275's in the 1960a is bog standard. The cab gives you mono & stereo options & the latter would be perfect in 2 x 8 Ohm mode with the AD120VTH. Your AD60VTH is mono of course, and you also have 4/16 Ohm speaker out options. Similarly, the 1960a has 4/16 Ohm mono versions too (both offer full 4-speaker delivery), so its a perfect fit.

In theory the 4 Ohm should give more volume and be the most dynamic/punchier connection. But try both 4 and 16 Ohm connections (but make sure you set the head & cab to match!) to see which you prefer. Do make sure you're using proper unshielded speaker cables & nor shielded guitar cables to connect the head & cab.

Thanks for your the informative reply, Voxman! I'll definitely try both the 4 and 16 ohm options.

BTW - you can load down the addendum manual for the VTH here (inc all speaker connection options) and the main Valvetronix manuals (combos) too:
