looking at maybe an ac15

Postby bill rand » 30 Jan 2012, 23:37

Hi Rich and everyone just wondering about your thoughts on the ac15 i asked in the vox forum about an ac30 but after thinking about it i really cant be arsed humping one about lol. Anyway so that leaves the ac15 so i guess the same question applies which would be be best model at the moment , i know you praised the ac30c1 so would the same apply for the 15? And a general question would does the ac15 give out pretty much the same tones as an ac30 but quieter

cheers bill

Hi Bill
Yup, same goes for the new AC15 Custom. Lovely little amp that sounds best with the Alnico Blue (Alnico option only available in HW version).

The AC15 & AC30 are 'family' so you'd expect a good deal of similarity in their tone. However, the AC15 isn't quite just a lower powered version of the AC30 - it very much has its own character. The Vox feel & chime are there, but it isn't quite the same as an AC30. It has a more 'vintagy' feel to my ears. In 1x12" configuration you won't get the same fullness of sound from a 2x12", but then you won't get the weight either! If you do need a bigger tone, then a 1x12" extn cab is the way to go. I certainly wouldn't go 2x12" AC15 combo - for that weight you may as well go AC30!

Some further points - the AC15 doesn't have as much clean headroom as the AC15, so it breaks up a bit earlier. Feature wise, there are some differences to the AC30 e.g. the AC15 has no FX loop, and in the AC15 Custom you only get two input jacks rather than four (i.e. you get normal & top boost inputs but no choice of 'Hi' or 'Lo' impedence options as in the AC30). You do get both Hi & Lo in the HW version & if you can afford the HW with the Alnico Blue, that is the dogs doo-das!

Rich

More importantly, 30 days no quibble exchange, & 4 yr warranty through DV247!! Flag the price anomaly to them & they'll correct it. And don't be afraid to haggle - DV247 have some flexibility and are prepared to 'deal' a bit. I got 10% off my Laney Cub 12R with them.
