Just bought a blueface Vox AD60VT

Postby jb1331 » 02 Feb 2012, 16:58

I bought this amp off of Craigslist for $150.. it is missing the back panel and it seems to have a few issues, but I read all about that before I bought the amp..

The amp pretty much works fine and is completely stable with glorious sound.. i can do U2/Edge stuff now that is amazingly sonicly accurate after getting dialed in with my rig.. so much better than the other modelling amps I have owned..

One issue that bugs me.. The high input jack works completely fine, the low input jack however pretty much consistantly will get farty noises / pops when playing.. i cleaned it out with air and will be going to radio shack soon for some contact cleaner and do all the maintenance..Yes I did reset the amp to factory settings, but the low input jack is a consistant problem.. I like the low jack too since it does some EQ as well volume adjustments.. but I do not think it is a contact related issue, seems to be more 'electronic' maybe a bad cap or something..as stated earlier, the high jack has no issues whatsoever.

Anyone else experience that issue?

There is a small circuit board that the high and low inputs attach to inside the amp. There is a cabinet to chassis screw that is adjacent to this board. This cabinet to chassis screw attaches the side of the cabinet to the chassis and should be slightly shorter than the other chassis screws.

If one of the longer screws has been (or is) used in this location the screw can hit the circuit board and can cause damage resulting in a poor connection at the jack, often causing your symptom.

Well today I had an adventure and took the amp apart. Bought some contact cleaner/lubricant at Radio Shack.. Stripped it all down and blew all the jacks out, the attenutor switch and discovered the speaker out jack had a loose solder connection, and also where the speaker wire was connected to the pcb, a piece of that was barely touching another area of the PCB it should not be touching..

Got it all put back together and working like a champ. :)

I still get a little farty low note occasionally on the low jack.. like a ghost note ? it might be I am running a few layers of compression.. i might try backing that down..

I am more stoked about this amp than my Dr Z lol

Way to go jb - just shows that most glitches are down to some basic inexpensive maintenance!
