FX loop mod for AD50VT (by One-way)

Postby Voxman » 12 Aug 2007, 14:30

The following post is fully credited to One-way re his FX loop mod to his AD50VT, and to Ech who posted the original FX loop modification for his AD30VT. Don't know how long the photo's will be 'housed', but here it is: -

I pulled my amp apart last night and using Ech's info did the mod. I noticed a few things that may be helpful to others doing this mod to an AD50VT.
*After removing all back screws and side screws use a thin steel ruler to run around the seam to lever gently and break the excess glue that that put on in the process of putting the Tolex covering on the amp.
*Remove the tube (valve) and it gives plenty of room to pull out the PCB.
* Cut all of the plastic ties necessary so the wiring is free to pull the PCB out and turn it over.
*The printed circuit board is slightly different to the AD30VT as it has extra circuitry for the extension speaker out jack but the connection points are the same apart from the ground point on FX out.
* I used microphone cable as it has two wires plus the shield(ground) so it means less wiring than individual wires as Ech used and probably makes it tidier?
* Make sure you have a soldering iron suitable for electronics and proficient soldering skills otherwise you could cook the delicate components you are connecting to.
* Have good lighting and magnification if you are an old dude like me with less than perfect eye sight. I have one of those soldering stands that has clips to hold wires while you solder them plus a good magnifying glass to see the fine components.
I took a digital photo of the PCB and printed it out to compare with Ech's pics to make sure I cut and connected in the correct place.
I must admit I felt like a surgeon doing his first operation when I took a scalpel to cut the copper path.
After soldering the wires to PCB and my switching jacks I thoroughly tested the circuits using my digital multi meter with and without jack plug inserted and taped around the shield wire to make sure it did not short if it touched a live point on the PCB.
I haven't had much time to play around with the EQ apart from checking it worked OK.
I also painted the chrome grill with a wrinkled black finish but masked off a 1/4" strip around the edge for a silver border so it should look awesome when fitted.
I will include some photo links for those interested.
