Flexible With Speaker Ohm Choices? AD30VTXL

Postby soundchaser59 » 16 May 2011, 02:25

Can this amp handle a 4 ohm load instead of the stock 8 ohm?

If I were to deviate from the stock 8 ohm load, is it better for this particular amp to try a 4 ohm? or a 16 ohm? Which is less likely to cause any harm to the amp?

Well, I seem to remember from a while back, when I had the AD30VT 1x10, that the prevailing conclusion was that the amp could indeed handle a 4 ohm load just fine. I did try it quite often with that amp and it never had any problems that I was aware of.

So I went ahead and did the same experiment with this amp, AD30VT-XL 1x12. I recently put a Eminence Texas Heat 8 ohm in here and it sounds awesome.

So today I made a special hole on the back panel and mounted a jack. Wired it to the Texas Heat as a parallel jack. I have a small 1x10 cab with a 16 ohm Weber Texas 10 in it. When I run the amp with the 1x10 connected I should be looking at about a 5 ohm load. I tried it and it played fine and sounded really nice.

I don't expect any problems doing this. And I think I'll be able to monitor my sound a little better on stage without standing like a statue in one spot the whole time. Using two speakers will allow me to move around a bit and still hear myself ok.

Anybody else plugging in an external speaker with these amps?
