Egnater Tweaker

Postby marcovox » 16 Jun 2011, 21:20

We're all tweakers here, it seems, so anyone tried the Egnater Tweaker?

I love the idea of that much variety without any modelling. It's supposed to do Fender/Vox/Marshall and since I loathe metal and shredding etc that sounds like valve heaven

Hope to look at / play one of these myself. Looking to trade my Carvin XV112, which is 20 years old and never has sounded quite like I was hoping for. Just not sure whether I want another tube amp. Also considering a Fender Mustang III, but have read about digital fizz on clean single notes. Not good. I know Voxman tried one of these and liked it, but bought a Laney Cub 12R instead, as it suited him better. The Laney didn't quite give me what I was looking for either. :|
G&L SC-3, Ibanez RG550, Epi SG, Fender G-DEC 3 30, Vox AD60VTX w/ VC12, Carvin XV112, Line 6 JM4 Looper, Vox ToneLab, Cry Baby, Digitech RP1, BBESS, Danelectro 7-band EQ, EHX Hum Debugger, Janglebox and Bad Monkey.

It isn't real unless you feel it!

I have one and really like it. I put 6L6's in it and the thing kicks. I had hoped I could upgrade the iron and get it up to a 30/40 (dual 6L6) watt amp but no go. However there is a 40 watt Tweaker in the makings but not sure when it's coming out.

Amp has a lot of tones in it and is pretty beefy sounding. There's one mod I read about which replaced the gain "hot/clean" switch with a 1/4 inch jack making it foot switchable and THAT is way cool. The gain switch makes for a prefect boost and really should have been done like that to begin with.

There's also a mod that Egantor does to fix a problem with the fx loop. Forget what or why but it was fairly simple and free I think. Still you have to send in the amp. It's on his web site.

I also switched out the PI to an AT7 instead of an AX7 which I do in all my amps. Makes a big difference. Previous owner was really diggin the amp after I did the tube changes. He was amazed at the difference and he's pretty well versed in the amp dept..

In the end you'll probably find you like the "british" voicing. you can pull up some really good chunky tones. Plus you can get pretty loud if you use a good efficient speaker. For the money I'd use a Cannabis Rex. You won't be disappointed.

Found a used Egnator Rebel 20 cab and ditched that "Elite 80" aka "Vintage 30" Chinese spkr. and loaded it with the Red Fang. btw, the elite 80 sounds better than the Vintage 30. The rebel cab is front ported, made of of birch, has a pass thru spkr connector and is solidly built. One of the better off the rack spkr boxes I've seen. So are the Blackheart closed back 112 cabs and the discontinued Epiphone Valve Jr open back cabs. Those are are built really well too and their construction is nearly identical so the same folks are making those two cabs.

If you can find a Tweaker for under 300 bucks or a Rebel 20 cab for under 200 grab them. You'll make use out of both of them.

Thanks Rich, nice review. They are a deal more expensive over here, like all pro audio. For some reason 1$ there becomes £1 here (even when it all comes from China anyhow)

Btw the fx loop fix is to correct the level which is too high and overloads many popular stompboxes

Since someone broached the topic of Egnater, while looking for ideas on building my own ext cab, I was perusing that site and saw their Tourmaster 212x extension cab. If anyone has played with this I'd love to know how it sounded. For anyone unfamiliar, it offers the possibility to configure the back open or closed via a removable panel in the rear. Since I struggled deciding whether my build should be open or closed ( i went with closed), I found this intriguing but since this was my first build I didn't want to complicate the process.
