Close open back of VT120?

Postby jacobri » 23 Jan 2012, 19:37

I was curious if anyone has tried either partially or completely closed back. My goal would be to eliminate some of the flubbiness. I have an EQ & BBE inline and the bass rolled off on amp & EQ to the point where I have no bass response.

It might be an issue of hearing in the basement versus when I play on stage AND that I only hear out of one ear now so bass response might be innacurate.

Imagine the world in mono...bummer :-(

If its any help I tried tasking the back off my AD120VTX. It didn't seem to make much difference to the bass response on my amp.

Which did you prefer - the back on or off, and why?

I suspect on stage I would prefer the greater spread of the open back. Its easier to hear an open back on stage I find. However it was designed as a closed back and I think that will help tighten up the bottom end. I find the bass response of the deferent models varies alot. I need to get it off the ground. Has anyone tried one of those AC30 type stands that you see around??

I probably will get stereo graphic / enhancer to go in the loop but then the problem will be to get my tone right with diferent models i.e. I run the Bluesbreaker with no bass at all but the AC30 with bass at about 10 - 11 oclock.

Still can't believe how good it sounded in a live context. 2 x 60w with master at 1 oclock. Might have been even better at 2 x 30w with the master on full - maybe next time. :D

I don't recommend the MV at full. After 3pm (max) the tube saturation generally gets too spongy on many of the amp models for my taste.

Thanks Rich I'll remember that. I do know that 2 x 1w is too loud for the house (I live in a three bed semi). I have to knock the master down to half.
