AD50VT speaker question

Postby blumontag » 13 Mar 2011, 06:02

Hi -

My wife and I have an AD30VT and AD50VT. I recently upgraded to a Celestion G10L-35 for her AD30, and it sounds amazing! This speaker is no longer in production, but I'd like to find one for my
AD50.
There are a few on ebay right now for a good price, but they are 16 ohm. I also wonder if they are rated to handle the power of the AD50. Also, is it okay to put a 16 ohm speaker in the AD50?
My search in this forum indicated it should be:

"My main concern was using a 15-ohm rated speaker with my 8-ohm rated amp."
Nik:
With a conventional, modern, solid state power amp like in the AD30, that won't be a problem. For valve amps and also for the AD60 and AD120 amps which closely mimic a valve power amp, an impedance mis-match is not a good idea and can lead to catastrophic failure.

What do you think? Thanks!

You will have no problem running 16 ohms but need a minimum of 50 watts if you plan to run it at extreme volumes. I have my AD50VT wired to run both the internal speaker and an 8 ohm cab (16 ohm) as well. You do lose a little volume wise but if the new speaker has a higher db rating it wont make any difference probably. Ive got a Celestion hot 100 in mine which is way better than the stock spikey sounding 70/80.

Thanks.
So this speaker, rated at 35 watts, might not cut it for the AD50VT, especially if I want to crank it up?

Well, I did the speaker swap...as suggested elsewhere, I got A Weber California. I'm very pleased with the sound, particularly at higher volumes. Very balanced. Lets the amp models shine through.

Do you think the Celestion Hot 100 would sound good in the AD50VT 212 version of this amp? I was also wondering how I would run another cab in stereo. If I can what models? Any help would be appreciated!
