AD30VT craziness....even after troubleshooting

Postby mhellad » 06 Sep 2011, 05:11

Alright, so I have an AD30VT from '06? It's always worked great and is by far the amp I have the most fun with. The other night after unplugging and moving it to clean the room I plugged it in later only to find I couldn't get any sound. I switched guitars and then sound returned....but now there was a constant low hissing/buzz sound (almost like the light static you hear from a monitor). Sound is MUCH more pronounced on the reverb setting and the other reverb combination effects. I have also noticed that the reverb parameters were not adjusting normally anymore as well. Turn the effects off and the hiss substantially dissipates but is still present. Volumes and gain didn't seem to affect it much either however it was more substantial with the power adjustment higher. In fact even with everything set at minimum the sound is still present. One more thing I noticed is that there was a slight vibrating/buzzing that could be felt with my hand on top of the amp that I never noticed before. This all seems odd to me and after lots of searching forums and such I haven't seen anything that matches up. Appropriate tube and speaker were changed a few months ago. Same noise is present through the earphones. But here’s a loop for ya…I took the entire amp apart last night, made sure everything was clean made sure the circuit board appeared intact. After putting it back together I heard the same sound…until I started messing with the edit one knob and the noise reduction. I usually have the noise gate off- turned all of the way to the Left. I turned it a few times to adjust it and there started to become more noise when turned all the way back to the left. I then was only able to find one spot (about a quarter turn from off) where the noise was not present. This was all done on the Boutique clean and UK70’s. Strange that there would only be one specific spot on the noise reduction where this humming/hiss would go away (and this is all without a guitar even plugged in). The reverb parameters also now seem to work. So today I started hearing the hiss again so I took everything apart again, cleaned the hell out of it and now I can’t get the hiss to go away again…although I can adjust the reverb now. I just don’t understand why this noise never happened prior and why my reverb parameters now work because of adjusting the noise gate? Amp is always in the same room and for the most part stays in the same place. All inputs have been cleaned. I perform the factory reset whenever anything seems funky but nothing has worked for this and I’ve never had anything this bothersome. Valve was changed long before this new problem and its seating as firmly as it’s going to get. I even switched out to an older spare valve and no change. Wall outlets don’t seem to matter either. Anyways, I’m at a loss and just want my amp back where it was 3 nights ago when I had no problems whatsoever. Should I just go for a new VT40+?...I played with one today but there’s just too many options and parameters on that thing, my AD30VT is enough of a distraction.

Please break your post up into paragraphs - otherwise it's very difficult to read in one solid mass & will deter folk from reading it (like me! )

Sorry, hope this is a bit easier to navigate:

I had sorta the same thing happen to my ad30vt. I discovered it was the power wattage level adjustment knob on the rear of the amp. I started turning the knob back and forth a few times with the amp on, and the buzzing stopped. I also had to use pressure "lightly pushing or pulling while turning back and forth." I believe the pots on these things are of bad quality, as I heard this is common. This only temporarily fixed the problem as I still have to play with it sometimes. I hope this helps.

When you say you took the amp apart and cleaned everything, what do you mean, exactly?
Just so I don't suggest something you've already done.
And have you tried whacking it or setting it down sharply on the floor? That can temporarily fix a poor connection issue.
